Experts predict that, in the future, artificial intelligence in healthcare will evolve toward a modular architecture in which different services operate within a shared data and management environment. For now, however, healthcare organizations primarily use point solutions designed to address individual tasks.

These forecasts were presented by the international consulting firm McKinsey & Company in its report, The Coming Evolution of Healthcare AI Toward a Modular Architecture. The analysts note that AI solutions currently tend to perform individual tasks, such as interpreting X-ray images or preparing documentation. This has resulted in a fragmented AI environment. According to the researchers, the next step will be to integrate these disparate AI solutions into a unified system capable of coordinating multiple AI tools.

“We believe the wave of AI innovation will drive two important changes. First, leaders will lay the foundation for a modular, connected AI architecture that brings together individual solutions, data infrastructure, and AI agents into a unified whole. Second, it will create opportunities for healthcare organizations to leverage extensive patient records and build clinical data repositories, stimulating innovation, improving clinical care delivery, and enhancing patient outcomes,” the report states.

According to the researchers, a modular architecture will consist of several key layers: AI tools designed for specific tasks; intelligent agents that coordinate interactions between different AI solutions; and protocols that provide secure access to data.

The researchers already recommend implementing point solutions with the understanding that they will eventually need to be integrated into a unified system.

The report’s authors also emphasize that high-quality medical data is essential for successful AI adoption in healthcare. Such data could become a new source of revenue through the sale of large, high-quality datasets for AI training. Access to data — particularly long-term patient medical histories — is expected to become an important competitive advantage.

ComNews spoke with AI experts to assess how relevant the report’s conclusions are for the Russian market.

Yevgeny Maslov, Client Relationship Manager at Cinimex, shared his views with the publication on the advantages and disadvantages of a modular AI architecture in healthcare.
